i think that your experience is pretty similar to what a lot of people are feeling about the whole "emergent" church. a feeling that the church of yesterday is inadequate for today is a good thing. but it needs to go beyond "we have candles, a coffee break, and headset mics, therefore we are postmodern." we need to be consistently reimagining church. it's like refinishing furniture- a perfect table can be useless because of it's finishing, so every now and again it needs to be stripped to the wood and redone. that being said, the wood needs to be there, solid and consistent.

Thanks for reading, Steve, I appreciate it! Your blog is, obviously, one of the ones I've been reading and have been inspired by.

As for the microphone... yeah. I personally associate them mostly with the musical Rent. It's definitely a case of "just because we can." Maybe I'm just a traditionalist in terms of sound tech, but I don't know why a lav mic (lapel) wouldn't have been good enough. :D

Welcome to the discussion... good to find your site.

You know you describe something that created quite a visual...

The sermon, preached by a man wearing one of those headset microphones that clips on your ear and sits over your cheek like they wear in musical theatre productions, was good enough.

File this under the concept of "just because we can doesn't mean we should". Those headset microphones always make me think of Madonna or Janet Jackson... and to me they simply SCREAM, "notice me... I am trying to be really cool and relevant". Ugh!

Looking forward to hearing more of your journey Jenny. Let me know how you are doing from time to time... if you get the chance. And I will be checking back in to see how you are doing. Tkae care.
