hmmm.

The worship leader at church has asked all the folks my age to come to a meeting on Saturday to talk about worship and “what meaningful times of worshipping God look like” for us.

My first reaction was, well, I don’t really worship God much these days so I shouldn’t go. But then I thought, well, one of the big reasons I don’t go to church is because of the pervasive androcentrism that make it extremely unpleasant for me to even sit through a service as a passive observer, let alone a worshipper.

So should I go and tell him that?

if he asked, then go. the only thing worse than not having your voice heard is being asked for it and not speaking up. it may be more than he bargined for, but that’s okay too.

however, seeing as he asked “what meaningful times of worshipping God look like” for you, try to place it in a constructive voice. not that i know how to do that, but theoretically it sounds better. :-)

What does meaningful worship mean though? Meaningful for God or for a bunch of 20-somethings being entertained?

Good question — and in many other churches I think the answer might be the latter. But in this case — well, I’ve known this guy for a long, long time and he really is a good worship leader. One of the best kind; I really believe that his motivation for leading musical worship is not egotistical or self-aggrandizing. He’s one of those worship leaders who does such a good job his persona is kind of null onstage. Not that he doesn’t have a personality or a style, but it’s just so humble (but not fake-humble) and acquiescent. Yeah, acquiescent: that’s the word to describe him.

Anyway, if I thought he was just asking to figure out what would entertain us, I would never even consider going.

yep. go. from my persepective as a worship leader at least. let him know. full barrelled androcentricism and all. but don’t let too much ride on his response. sometimes we just gotta tell the truth because we gotta tell the truth, even if it isn’t effective, doesn’t produce results.
